Spoon Carving is a great way to release your creative side whilst making something practical. This class is an introduction to using carving tools and getting the feel of working with wood through the making of your spoons. But beware - it's highly addictive.

In this course students will be given the necessary knowledge to properly set up, tune and maintain the core tools of a Japanese craftsperson's toolkit, with a focus on correct sharpening technique. They will then be guided through the process of making their own 70mm Japanese smoothing plane.
Eco art activities, fun for all the family. Explore the native seed pod collection displayed in hand woven cats claw vine baskets and create your own natural Bush Critter friend.
You will be able to take your wooden boat home with you at the end of the workshop and have learnt some amazing skills in the process. Ages 5 to 10
Welcome back to Mullumbimby's Pat Gregory for her fourth year as guest demonstrator. Teaching is her passion, woodwork is her craft and women, mostly, are her students. Let Patt help you arm yourself with the knowledge and skills to navigate your way through the timber racks and tool aisles of timber yards and hardware stores. And she’ll spend her time at Maleny Wood Expo doing just that. Drop by and have a chat with her in the SES Pavilion - and be inspired to get into woodwork!
Learn to make beautiful paper using weeds and other garden waste in this two-hour workshop.
Matt Anderson and Justin Lai are local artists and teach at schools sharing indigenous culture and knowledge. Make your own boomerang from specially selected timber.
Learn the basic techniques of coopering and create a unique wooden bucket. You will learn how to fashion a stave using hand tools; rough assemble and then shape your bucket using a custom made hand plane. From there you will grove the staves to receive the heading and prepare and fit the heading in the base. Your bucket will then be ready for the iron hoops, which you will learn to flare, rivet, and fit. You will finish off your project by inserting the rope handle.
Build your own canoe at Maleny Wood Expo!
Under the tutelage of highly experienced canoe-builder Brian Jones, you and your crew will build a 3.6 m canoe from hoop pine.
Don will be conducting his popular 2 day hand held woodcarving course at this year's Expo. Hand held carving is a good way to learn the art of wood carving and is how Don started his career. An excellent path for new carvers without the expense involved in carving larger pieces.
