Woodwork for Women
We are delighted to have Patt Gregory as a guest demonstrator at the 2014 Maleny Wood Expo. Teaching is her passion, woodwork is her craft and women, mostly, are her students.
Patt has spent much of her working life helping women arm themselves with the knowledge and skills to navigate their way through the timber racks and tool aisles of hardware stores and timber yards.
And she’ll spend her time in Maleny doing just that - welcoming questions and visitor conversations about her own woodworking story, as well as sharing tips on the tools you need to get started (what to look for when buying them as well as safety tips) and timber talk (the properties of wood, what to look for, where to buy it including recycled and salvaged timber sources).
She’ll introduce easy ‘first projects’ and build a $10 Table with step-by-step demonstrations and hands-on audience participation. She’ll introduce the easy-to-use tools required and leave you hunting your pockets for spare change to invest in the few resources need to join the woodworking family.
Patt has inspired hundreds of women (as well as men and children) to pick up tools, learn woodworking skills and create their own projects.
And apart from winning a place in the hearts of all her students, Patt won gold in a Nationwide 'Best Shed' Competition in the May 2011 Australian Wood Review, blitzing the field of over 50 sheds to scoop the top prize.
Patt runs Woodwork For Women courses from her home in Mullumbimby in northern NSW, aimed at giving women the confidence and skill to work with wood through affordable, fun and practical short courses.
"All sorts of women do the course," she said, "and age is no barrier. They are very different types. Some of them are executives looking for a way to relax and take time for themselves. Some are single mothers or mothers of young children needing their own space and time."
And her book Woodwork for Women is “what the industry has been waiting for, filling a much needed gap,” according to Stan Ceglinski, Woodworker, The Billinudgel Woodworking Company. “It is a fantastic resource to inspire more people to learn woodworking skills from a woman who knows what she's doing and knows how to communicate the message"
Woodwork for Women - Cutting a New Path for Beginners is written specifically for women, taking a fresh look at how to learn woodwork. It is an instructional book that focuses on close up photos of techniques that will make you want to get some tools and start building.
With easy to follow instructions that clearly and completely explain all you need to know to plan, design and build your first project, this is an informative and entertaining book of women willing to share their woodworking stories, insights and advice. It is ideal for the complete beginner or if you wish to know those finer points of measuring, marking and joint making.
Welcome to Maleny Pat – we look forward to you joining the Maleny Wood Expo family.
