Local blues duo and cigar box guitar makers Eb'n'Flo will share their passion of making and playing Diddleybows at the Maleny Wood Expo. Eb ‘n’ Flo (aka Fleur Shelton and Paul Thorley) will take you on a musical journey through the blues, teaching students young and old, to build a Diddleybow from recycled materials and found objects.
The Diddleybow is a single-stringed American instrument with its origins in West Africa. It is fundamental to the BLUES, is played with a slide and is the Grandfather of what we know as the Slide-Guitar and Lap Steel.
Described by the King of Cigar Box Guitars in America Shane Speal, as being responsible for the movement in Australia, Paul has been building these kinds of instruments for over a decade and his slide guitars can now be found in many parts of the world.
This one-day hands-on workshop offers participants a chance to create their own single stringed traditional roots instrument. PLUS all participants are invited to a follow up lesson and jam session with Eb’n’Flo on the following Sunday, 3rd May.
Learn how to make your music come to life on your own unique, handmade instrument. Knowledge gained and information received will allow participants to further create any electric multi stringed instrument their hearts desire, utilizing pieces of wood, axe and shovel handles, hub caps, old biscuit tins, belt buckles and sardine cans just some examples of the obscure items that can be used.
This workshop is perfect for people who wish to learn basic slide guitar techniques and is great for musicians of all ages and skill levels. However, children under 15 will need an adult present.
